My early memories of Medusa were formed by the monstrous depiction in the ‘Clash of the Titan’s movie where she attacks the ‘hero’ Perseus. Learning that original texts describe her curse as punishment, after being assaulted (by Poseidon) echos the ‘victim shaming’ women still experience to this day. It appears that unlike that movie - Medusa was beheaded not in battle, but when fast asleep, hiding out in a cave to avoid accidentally harming others with her glance. Apart from her snake hair, her inner and outer beauty remains intact.
I’m always curious to hear the ‘other side of the story’ - the books ‘Pandora’s Jar’ by Natalie Haynes, and Cassandra Speaks by Elizabeth Lesser inspired a ‘rebranding’ of Pandora and Medusa from the Greek Myths and my own interpretation of ‘Eve’.
