My background is in science and academia - where prominent figures such as Isaac Newton are revered for their curiosity and contribution to scientific knowledge. Newton is often depicted in art, reclining under his apple tree, where it is said he was inspired to develop his theory of gravity. Old Testament inspired art also depicts Eve under a tree with an apple. But as the story goes - her curiosity is not revered, but shamed and punished. In todays society, we look to encourage all children to read and learn. We push for women and girls to pursue STEM subjects, so the best minds regardless of gender, can contribute to creating a better future. This Lino Print ‘rebrands’ Eve, to celebrate her as a role model of the very first human being who had the courage to follow her curiosity and embrace knowledge. Newton is considered ‘The Father of Science’, so it seems fitting to give Eve the title ‘The Mother of Knowledge’.
I’m always curious to hear the ‘other side of the story’ - the books ‘Pandora’s Jar’ by Natalie Haynes, and Cassandra Speaks by Elizabeth Lesser inspired a ‘rebranding’ of Pandora and Medusa from the Greek Myths and my own interpretation of ‘Eve’.
